Hey guys! Releasing another rant today because it's been a bit since my last one.

This one was recorded at the same time as the previous rant, which is why the audio quality is slightly off from usual. Here you go:

Anyways, feel free to leave your comments below and I'd love to discuss with all of you further! Hope you enjoy, and have a great day!

Bell's Palsy

5 min read
Hello there internet!

I wanted to write a journal today addressing something that happened to me yesterday. This will serve as an interesting life story, and also an explanation to all of my friends who aren't aware of my current medical situation. If I had to explain the entire situation over 10 times, it would be very boring. So here's the explanation and some backstory! You can read a tl;dr at the bottom if you're lazy.

So, on Wednesday January 27th 2016, I awoke as I normally did. The last few days had been tough for me physically and mentally, as I had been having some university stresses compounding on some large muscle soreness from a particularly vigorous sports session. It came as no surprise then, that I was feeling a bit weird when I woke up. I had a huge crick in my neck, my right ear was sore and occasionally as I sat in bed, tears would leak involuntarily out of my right eye. It was certainly strange, however I chalked it up to a strange night's sleep and got up to do my normal daily activities. After hanging out and using my computer for about an hour, I went and made myself lunch. As I was eating it, it tasted very strange to me. "Huh!", I thought, "I think the meat must be going bad... or perhaps the bread".

My tongue was feeling a bit odd after eating, a sort of almost numbness to it, so I went to brush my teeth in the bathroom. As I was brushing my teeth, I suddenly noticed that spitting felt weird. I tried it over and over again, and each time I spit it seemed like it was coming out more on one side of my mouth than the other. I looked up at the mirror to check out what was going on there when I noticed something very strange. When I smiled/grimaced to try and look at my teeth, my smile was lopsided. The right side of my mouth wasn't pulling back as far as the left side was. Upon attempting to move those muscles normally, I realized that I had lost some control over the muscles on the right hand side of my face. It wasn't just the bottom part of my mouth: My nose, my eyebrow and my eyelid all had trouble moving when I tried to move them. It wasn't like they weren't responding. They just weren't really going as far as they usually did. (See pictures included below for examples of what I mean.)

Sufficed to say, I immediately started freaking out. I'm not sure about what your first thought about something like that is, but the only thing I know that affects half of your face like that is a stroke. I frantically called my parents to get their take on it, and they were admittedly very nervous about it as well. Neither one of us was sure it was a stroke, as I didn't have any other symptoms (and usually strokes are pretty fast acting), but sufficed to say we were both freaking out enough to warrant an emergency trip to the nearby doctor. After a little wait, we went through what had happened and he quickly assessed that I wasn't having a stroke. Literally none of the other symptoms were present, and after I described some of the other things I'd been experiencing he told me exactly what it was: Bell's Palsy.

What is Bell's Palsy? To summarize, it is an inflammation affecting what is called the "7th cranial nerve", which causes partial nerve paralysis on one side of your face. You can read more about it here, here, and here. It's estimated to take about 2-4 weeks to go back to normal, which should be speeded up by the steroid drugs I was prescribed and am now taking on a daily basis.

So yeah! Basically half my face is suddenly, temporarily, partially paralysed! That's fun! If your definition of fun is a sudden fear that you're dying of a stroke and some lasting facial paralysis that makes you look a bit weird/messes with your eyes and mouth. So yeah. Fun. Sufficed to say, I'm not particularly feeling great about it. I'm super self-conscious about it right now, and it's causing some annoying side effects. For example, if I blink normally my right eyelid doesn't close completely, so my right eye has gotten super irritated all day. Eating's a bit difficult as my lip keeps getting in between my food and my teeth. And there's a bit of a throbbing pain near my ear.

Hopefully at the end of the day this will all make a very entertaining story to tell people in the years to come. Thanks for listening! I'll keep you updated if I die or something like that (lol jk about the dying part; I'll be fine).

-RP

P.S. Here's an album of pictures showing how it's affecting my face. Basically I'm pulling my muscles into the widest grimace I can in order to exacerbate what it looks like. When I'm just resting you actually can't tell at all that I have anything wrong. Also, sorry for the scraggly beard. Shaving/trimming has been the absolute least of my worries these last few days!
